Liver diseases in the Asia-Pacific region: a Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology Commission

Abstract: The Asia-Pacific region is home to more than half of the global population and accounted for 62·6% of global deaths due to liver diseases in 2015. 54·3% of global deaths due to cirrhosis, 72·7% of global deaths due to hepatocellular carcinoma, and more than two-thirds of the global burden of acute viral hepatitis occurred in this region in 2015. Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection caused more than half of the deaths due to cirrhosis in the region, followed by alcohol consumption (20·8%), non-alcoholic fa… Show more

“…Recently, a consensus by an international panel of experts recommended a change in name for NAFLD to metabolic (dysfunction) associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) 7 . Given the dramatic and growing prevalence of MAFLD that affects more than quarter of the global population, 8,9 the serious hepatic and extra‐hepatic sequelae, 10‐12 and the unavailability of pharmacological therapy, re‐naming and re‐defining of this disease is welcome.…”

“…The Asia-Pacific region holds more than half of the global population and accounted for 62.6% of all deaths due to liver diseases globally in 2015. Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection caused more than half of the deaths due to cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases, followed by alcohol consumption, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and chronic infection with hepatitis C virus [ 4 ]. With persistent damage, live fibrosis develops into cirrhosis and, even to hepatocellular carcinoma, together with a series of complications, including hepatic encephalopathy, hepatic failure, and portal hypertension [ 5 , 6 ].…”
