“…However, there has been a slight decrease with respect to previous years (4,026 in 2003; 4,231 in 2004; and 4,152 in 2005). In order to alleviate this organ deficit, living donation is being encouraged because this is an ethically acceptable therapeutic option given the low level of risk for the donor and the good clinical results that are achieved [3,4,5,6]. However, in spite of most Spanish transplant centers having an ongoing living donation program, at present this type of donation is minimal [1].…”

“…However, some researchers considered that time to return to work and routine activities was related to physicians' recommendations [9]. In general, physicians told patients that laparoscopic or hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery resulted in faster convalescence and earlier return to activities.…”

“…In general, physicians told patients that laparoscopic or hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery resulted in faster convalescence and earlier return to activities. Lind et al [9] reported that complete return to work occurred sooner in their laparoscopic donor nephrectomy group compared with their open donor nephrectomy and hand-assisted donor nephrectomy groups. Some studies indicated that the time for Americans to return to work after surgery was relatively short.…”

“…However, living transplantation is currently a necessity because of the inability of the cadaveric donation to cover the minimum requirements of kidney availability for transplantation. In addition, living kidney donation is benefiting from the better outcomes achieved compared to cadaveric donation and the lower risk from surgery in healthy individuals who donate, especially with the development of extraction by laparoscopy [16,17,18]. …”

“…In Spain, there is currently institutional and political support for encouraging living kidney donation: most Spanish transplant centers have an ongoing living donation program and there is a favorable attitude among the population [7] and health care personnel [8, 16]. The main limiting factors that we have found are the very recipients on the waiting list who are used to hearing about the high cadaveric donation rates and so they are not willing to receive a living donated organ from a family member when they could receive an organ from a cadaveric donor as they believe this to be a type of ‘mutilation’ [9, 10].…”
