Live birth of twins derived from zona-free oocytes

Abstract: Patients with the rare condition of 100% zona-free oocytes maintain the potential for pregnancy after careful micromanipulation of the oocytes. Caution is recommended on the number of embryos selected for transfer to reduce the risk of multiple gestation.

“…The complete absence of ZP in oocytes is a rare event in IVF treatment; however, oocytes with damaged or partially absent zona due to laboratory manipulations are not uncommon [1,5,7,13]. Consequently, much of the published experiences of ZP-free patients are cases of ZP damage and loss during handling, rather than a complete absence due to ZP production failure.…”

“…In comparison to a previous report regarding successful live birth of complete zona-free patients due to ZP production issue [7], this case study reported a set of modified protocols in detail along with full time-lapse footage of blastocyst development. Due to the rare occurrence of such case, statistical analysis with a reasonable sample size to demonstrate which culture environment is best for these oocytes is deemed to be too difficult to acquire.…”

“…In our study, we used the human-cloned hyaluronidase enzyme, which is reported to be less traumatic to unprotected oocytes and oolemmas (de Vos et al, 2008), and a diagnostic ICSI to both confirm the diagnosis of complete ZFO and assess the feasibility of ICSI and embryo development using ZP-free oocytes. Different manipulation procedures for genetically ZP-free oocytes and successful ICSI fertilization using non-denuded and partially denuded oocytes have been reported previously (Paz et al, 2004;Vajta et al, 2010;Hu and Trolice, 2016).…”

“…In a previous report, no zygotes or two-cell-stage embryos that lacked a ZP survived storage in liquid nitrogen 8 . It is, however, possible for embryos to develop normally without a ZP, and the live birth of twins from autologous ZF oocytes was reported in 2016 9 . On the contrary, for assisted reproduction technology or reproductive biotechnology, the ZP is essential for handling oocytes or embryos with a micromanipulator.…”
