Lithostratigraphy of Zechstein evaporites of the central and north-western parts of the Mogilno Salt Diapir, based on boreholes Z-9 and Z-17

Abstract: This paper presents the results of comprehensive mineralogical and petrographic studies conducted on evaporite rocks of the Zechstein (Upper Permian) period, extracted from boreholes drilled in the Mogilno diapir. Based on the research results, the occurrence of rock salts, potash-magnesium salts (kieseritic sylvinites), clayey salts, zubers, and anhydrites was identi ed. Those formations were assigned to cyclothems PZ-3 and PZ-2. No presence of evaporites belonging to cyclothems PZ-1 and PZ-4 were discovered.… Show more

“…Its origin is linked with the salinity crisis that, according to various estimates, lasted for between 20 ka [ 24 ] and 600 ka [ 23 ] and led to the disappearance of large marine basins. Three samples (W2, W3, W4) of sedimentary rocks surrounding the salt deposit in the Wieliczka Salt Mine were collected at a depth of 110–130 m. Rock samples differed in lithology and the accompanying salt type ( Table 1 ) [ 19 , 25 , 26 ].…”

“…Currently, the solution mining is conducted only in the SE part of the Mogilno I. In the Mogilno II storage caverns for gas have been built since 1997 (Wachowiak et al, 2012). Both salt deposits are located in the Mogilno salt structure, which is 7 km wide and 30 km long.…”
