Lithostratigraphy of the continental Devonian sediments in North-East Greenland

Abstract

A new lithostratigraphy is erected for the continental Devonian sedimentary rocks in North-East Greenland based on genetic stratigraphy.

Each basin stage is composed of several depositional complexes and shows approximately similar drainage patterns, with deposition mainly from the west and north.…”

The overlying sandstones(Kap Kolthoff Group, up to 2700 m thick) were deposited by extensive coalescing braidplain systems with southward drainage patterns(Olsen & Larsen 1993;Olsen 1993) dominated by sandy deposits; this group contains intervals of basic and acid volcanic rocks. During the following stage(Kap Graah Group, up to 1300 m thick) sedimentation was dominated by aeolian deposits succeeded by an alluvial and aeolian complex, which was dominated by finegrained sandstones and siltstones.…”

Devonian tetrapod trackways and trackmakers; a review of the fossils and footprints

“…The fossils derive from two horizons of the East Greenland Famennian, the older Aina Dal and the younger Britta Dal formations. The dating of the sediments is still only coarsely resolved within the Famennian, and is based largely on the vertebrate fauna (Bendix-Almgreen, 1976;Olsen and Larsen, 1993). Olsen and Larsen (1993) place the Devonian -Carboniferous boundary within the Stensi6 Bjerg formation, which overlies the Britta Dal.…”
