Lithium inhibits human sperm motility in vitro.

Abstract: Lithium is a widely prescribed drug used for the treatment of bipolar affective illness. Previous reports on its effects on sperm motility and male fertility are conflicting. The effect of lithium on human sperm motility was examined in vitro using the modified transmembrane migration method. This technique takes account of the dilution of lithium that occurs during the incubation. Lithium inhibits human sperm motility in vitro in concentrations comparable with those reported to be achieved in semen after oral… Show more

“…[32] On the basis of these information and results of this study, treatment with lithium severely reduces active progressive motility with linear acceleration in a straight direction, especially at the highest concentration, and the flagellar movements change into slow vibrations with intervals. [33] Moreover, abnormal sperm's tail and curled membrane in this area were observed in this study.…”

“…Psychot ic disorders affect childbearing in a number of ways, including lower rates of fertility in affected adults (1)(2)(3) and higher rates of obstetric complications in affected women (4,5). Greater risk of fetal, perinatal, and infant mortality among exposed offspring has also been found, although there remains a need for the accurate and precise quantification of risk in the overall population of exposed offspring and in specific high-risk subgroups.…”
