Literature Review and Our Experience With Bleomycin-Based Electrochemotherapy for Cutaneous Vulvar Metastases From Endometrial Cancer

Abstract: Endometrial carcinoma is the most common gynecological malignancy and the fifth most common malignancy in women. The worldwide incidence is 15.9 new cases per 100,000 women per year, and the incidence in Europe is 22.7 new cases. Minority of cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage of the disease. Cutaneous metastases are very rare with a prevalence of 0.8%. If cutaneous metastases are present, the prognosis is poor with an overall survival of up to 12 months. In this review, we presented clinical data on trea… Show more

“…13,14 Safety and local efficacy after electrochemotherapy with bleomycin in locoregional cutaneous recurrences of vulvar carcinomas previously treated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery or unsuitable for standard treatments have been demonstrated. [15][16][17][18][19] The effectiveness of the clinical cases and studies is presented in Table 1. The success rate of such tumors is 80%, which is lower than the response rate of other skin tumors treated with electrochemotherapy.…”

“…ECT is used to achieve local tumor control and to improve disease symptoms. ECT has been used on superficial tumors in patients with vulvar squamous cell carcinoma [ 94 ]. This evidence is also supported by in vitro studies showing increased sensitivity of chemoresistant human cervical cancer cells to cisplatin after electroporation [ 32 ].…”

“…ECT with bleomycin may be considered also for vulvar metastasis to reduce pain and bleeding. 38 ECT may be used for the treatment of different histological types of cancer. Andresciani et al described the application of ECT as a treatment option in local recurrences of renal cell carcinoma 2 years after radical nephrectomy: ECT was effective, without evidence of residual disease 6 months after the procedure.…”
