Lists, Taxonomies, Lattices, Thesauri and Ontologies: Paving a Pathway Through a Terminological Jungle

Abstract: He has a general interest in algorithmics, and has co-authored a book on the topic of correctness-by-construction as a means of algorithm derivation. In addition, he has an interest in the use of formal concept analysis as a means of classification, as well as in the development and deployment of finite automata technology.

“…), y nivel 3, ontologías, que combinan las relaciones anteriores con otras conceptuales más complejas. Vilches-Blázquez, García Silva y Villazón Terrazas ( 2009) clasifican los recursos creados para representar la información semántica en glosarios, taxonomías, tesauros y ontologías, los cuales se diferencian atendiendo a su grado de complejidad (Gilchrist, 2003;Pieterse y Kourie, 2014).…”

“…A thesaurus is a collection that contains items within a selected domain. It allows for the specification of the attributes of items as well as the definition of equivalence, hierarchical, associative and/or contrast semantic relationships between its items (Pieterse and Kourie 2014). According to Almeida (2011) a thesaurus is a tool for vocabulary control and its semantics are used by humans, in contrast to the semantics in ontology which are used by machines.…”

“…While there is an opinion that thesauri can be simply reused as ontologies (Simprel 2009), some other authors emphasize the need to re-engineer thesauri to be used as ontology (Kless 2015). Pieterse and Kourie (2014) define ontology as an extension of a thesaurus, which contains items representing concepts, their attributes and relations in a more formal structure than required for thesauri in general. In fact, a thesaurus contains semantic information and hierarchical structure that make it an appropriate resource for ontology construction, nevertheless the semantically different kinds of relationships that are summarized as hierarchical relationships and associative relationships in thesauri have to be distinguished explicitly in ontologies (Kless 2015).…”

“…While identifying PHI for removal or anonymization remains an open challenge, simply redacting texts overlooks one of the more fundamental aspects of recent biomedical informatics, which has incorporated a focus on ontology-driven development (Mortensen et al, 2012;Ye et al, 2009;Tao et al, 2013;Sari et al, 2013;Omran et al, 2009;Lumsden et al, 2011;Pathak et al, 2009). In a domain like healthcare -where information is dense, diverse, and specialized -an ontology allows representing knowledge in a usable manner, because it describes a framework for clearly defining known terms and their relationships (Hakimpour and Geppert, 2005;Lee et al, 2006;Pieterse and Kourie, 2014;Strohmaier et al, 2013;Kapoor and Sharma, 2010). Once the data has been formally described via an ontology, new applications become apparent.…”
