Listeners’ Perceptions of Choral Performances With Static and Expressive Movement

Abstract: We examined how movement impacted listeners’ perceptions of choral performances. Participants ( N = 115; n = 60 nonmusic majors, n = 55 music majors) viewed excerpts of Moses Hogan’s “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel” under four conditions: good tone/expressive movement (GT/EM), good tone/static movement (GT/SM), poor tone/expressive movement (PT/EM), and poor tone/static movement (PT/SM). They rated tone quality and overall expressivity for each excerpt. We found a significant multivariate main effect for the ex… Show more

“…The results of this study show that, in general, movement does impact the perception of musical qualities. These results are consistent with previous research on this topic (Davidson, 2007; Geringer et al, 1997; Huang & Krumhansl, 2011; Juchniewicz, 2008; Krahé et al, 2015; Morrison et al, 2009; Nápoles et al, 2022; Silveira, 2014; VanWeelden & McGee, 2007). A comparison with audio-only stimuli shows that listeners discern not specifically a change in actual sound through the movement, but simply a change in perception of the sound when it is experienced in conjunction with the corresponding video stimuli.…”

“…Both music majors and non-music majors perceived homogenous levels of artistic tension (stress and release) in a dance recording (David Frego, 1999). Similar results were found by Nápoles et al (2022) However, experienced musicians responded more acutely to stage behavior of pianists than their non-musician counterparts (Huang & Krumhansl, 2011).…”

“…e experimental results include improving the multiple intelligences of the data [7]. Action research is used in some papers [8], and it is more inclined to cautious attitude [9][10][11]. Multiple Intelligences eory is a very good perspective for organizational education, but it is not necessarily an educational purpose [12].…”
