Liquidus temperatures in calcium ferrite slags in equilibrium with molten copper

Abstract: Experimental laboratory methods have been developed that enable phase-equilibria studies to be carried out on slags in the system Ca-Cu-Fe-O in equilibrium with metallic copper. These techniques involve equilibration at temperature, rapid quenching, and chemical analysis of the phases using electron-probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA). Equilibration experiments have been carried out in the temperature range of 1150°C to 1250°C (1423 to 1523 K) and in the composition range of 4 to 80 wt pct "Cu 2 O," 0 to 25 wt pc… Show more

“…The use of platinum crucibles to contain slags, as used in the previous investigation [5] on the FeO-Fe 2 O 3 -CaO-SiO 2 system, is not feasible due to the dissolution of metallic copper in the platinum crucibles resulting in the melting of the crucible. Previous studies of copper-saturated slags were undertaken by Ilyushechkin et al [7] and Takeda [8] investigating calcium-ferrite slags. Takeda [8] completed experiments at copper saturation using magnesia crucibles and analyzed the composition of the slag using a wet chemical assaying technique.…”

“…[1,2] The Cu-Fe-O system has been investigated several times experimentally in the past including phase equilibria and some thermodynamic properties. A thermodynamic modeling is not available so far and therefore the aim of the present study was to obtain a thermodynamic dataset for the Cu-Fe-O system.…”

“…Oxygen partial pressures are determined by the condensed system through a series of reactions such as 'Fe 3+ ↔ Fe 2+ ' based on the assumption of limited interaction with the gas phase as the condensed system approaches equilibrium significantly faster. This has been described in detail in previous papers [85,86]. The resulting oxygen partial pressures were not measured.…”
