Liquid-Liquid Extraction of Platinum from Chloride Media byN,N′-Dimethyl-N,N′-Dicyclohexyltetradecylmalonamide

Abstract: Liquid-liquid extraction of platinum(IV) from chloride media was carried out using N,Ndimethyl-N,N -dicyclohexyltetradecylmalonamide (DMDCHTDMA) in 1,2-dichloroethane. Platinum can be effectively extracted by DMDCHTDMA without addition of tin(II) chloride, since extraction percentages (%E) of 88% and 99% have been achieved from 6 M and 8 M HCl, respectively. Moreover, platinum can be successfully stripped through a simple contact with a 1 M HCl solution. The effect of some experimental parameters such as equil… Show more

“…One of the first works published about the extraction characteristics of these compounds toward PGMs [36] points out to the importance of including an additional heteroatom within the two amide groups, either oxygen or sulfur, to effectively extract Pd(II). In fact, a few N,N,N′,N′-tetrasubstituted malonamide [37,38] and succinamide [39] derivatives showed a general good affinity toward Pt(IV) extraction but a much more limited performance concerning Pd(II).…”

“…Different physiochemical methods for PGM separation from the leaching solutions are described in the literature, such as solvent extraction (Costa et al 2013;Paiva et al 2022), ion exchange (Lanaridi et al 2022), molecular recognition technology (Izatt et al 2015) and molecular ion imprinted polymer (Limjuco and Burnea 2022). However, some of those techniques may have drawbacks such as inadequate metal recovery (especially for low concentrations of metals), high energy requirements, as well as high chemical costs and environmental problems.…”

“…20 Monoamides are not efficient enough for PGM extraction. Thus, sulfide containing monoamides and various diamides, 21,22 including aza-or thio-bearing diamides 23,24 have been synthesized and successfully used in solvent extraction of PGM from chloride media. Malonamides proved to lead to very stable Pd(II) complexes, and to efficient extraction from nitrate media.…”
