This paper reports experimental data about the extraction of phosphoric acid from concentrated aqueous feeds (3 to 14 M H 3 PO 4 ) by the mixture of di-isopropyl ether (DiPE) and tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP) at 25 C:distribution ratios of H 3 PO 4 and water, and change of phase volume ratio during extraction. Then, a simple model based on the extraction isotherms of H 3 PO 4 and water as well as on the mass balance of these two compounds is developed in the case of the mixture of 90% wt DIPE and 10% wt TBP that corresponds to the solvent used at the industrial scale for the production of purified phosphoric acid.

Wet-process phosphoric acid is developed with the lack of a quality mineral. More and more research focuses on the purification of wet-process phosphoric acid with solvent extraction method. Liquid−liquid equilibrium data are of important significance in the industrial reality. In this work, equilibria data have been obtained for the two quaternary systems phosphoric acid−sodium sulfate−water−tri-n-butyl phosphate and phosphoric acid−potassium sulfate−water−tri-n-butyl phosphate, which contain concentrations of components and densities and viscosities of the equilibrium phases, and also the varieties of distribution coefficient of phosphoric acid are analyzed. In different systems (phosphoric acid solution with sodium sulfate or potassium sulfate at 303.2 K), the distribution coefficient of phosphoric acid with sodium was found to be higher than that of potassium ion, which demonstrates that the extraction of phosphoric acid with sodium is greater than that with potassium ion. In addition, NRTL model and Pitzer's equation are used to correlate the experimental data. The result shows that it is suitable for both systems and obtains adjustable binary parameters of the NRTL model.

Phase equilibria of the ternary system (water + phosphoric acid + mesityl oxide) were investigated, and experimental tie-line data of liquid–liquid equilibrium were obtained at T = (298.2, 308.2, and 318.2) K and atmospheric pressure. The mass fractions of mesityl oxide and phosphoric acid were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography and acid–base titration, respectively. A limitation for the complete investigation of biphasic regions was observed in the (water + phosphoric acid + mesityl oxide) system, which was not detected in previous aqueous ternary systems containing mesityl oxide and other weak acids. The unsaturated carbon–carbon double bond of mesityl oxide is the cause of this limitation. Distribution coefficients (0.05 up to 0.25) and separation factors (1.05 up to 2.58) were determined over the biphasic area and proved the efficiency of mesityl oxide in the studied range. All the evaluated experimental data of the ternary system were correlated using the Hand equation to confirm the reliability of the endpoints. Temperature increments increased the extraction ability of mesityl oxide. The nonrandom two-liquid activity coefficient model was applied to correlate the measured tie-line points. Binary interaction parameters were obtained in each temperature, and temperature dependence of the parameters was investigated. The root-mean-square deviation values (less than 1% in all correlations) proved the quality of modeling, and the interaction parameters were validated. Biphasic regions were predicted using the obtained interaction parameters where experimental data could not be measured.
