Liquid‐Crystalline Phases Made of Gold Nanoparticles

Abstract: Spontaneous formation of smectic and columnar structures was observed when spherical gold nanoparticles were functionalized with mesogenic thiols (see layered structure and X-ray pattern of a sample in smectic phase). The particle ordering is stimulated by softening of the interparticle potential and flexibility for deformation of the grafting layer.

“…BCP-templated nanocomposite structures, in which nanoparticles are forced into specific domains, have been reported both in simulations [44] and experiment, [45][46][47] but they have the same limitations as the conventional nanocomposites mentioned in the introduction (mixing, agglomeration and low inorganic volume fractions). An alternative route is to use HNPs where the hairs are BCPs [48,49] or liquid crystal mesogens [50,51] . This design allows for much more controlled structure formation (Fig.…”

“…GNPs covered with various calamitic molecules having a terminal thiol group connected linearly or laterally to the molecule, such as cyanobiphenyl thiol, cyclohexylphenoxy thiol and many derivatives of biphenyl thiol, have been reported to exhibit nematic, smectic and columnar phases. [29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36] Similarly, thiol-terminated bent-core ligands have also been used to prepare mesogen-passivated GNPs. 37 A number of physical studies have been performed on these LC-GNP composites.…”

“…A particularly striking case is that of spherical nanoparticles (NP), typically gold ones, decorated with mesogens attached radially or tangentially with a flexible thiol terminated spacer group to the gold surface [10][11][12][13][14][15], similar in various ways to first generation dendrimers, and forming various liquid crystalline phases.…”
