Liquid crystal panel for high efficiency barrier type autostereoscopic three-dimensional displays

Abstract: An autostereoscopic display with parallax barrier attached onto a liquid crystal panel suffers from the trade-off between brightness and crosstalk. One approach for making improvement by modifying the layout of light blocking components, such as thin film transistor, storage capacitor, and protrusion, in the liquid crystal pixel has been proposed. Ray tracing simulation shows that the aperture of the slanted barrier can be significantly increased, hence increasing efficiency, while keeping the same crosstalk l… Show more

“…Based on this configuration, we build a 9-view 2D/ 3D switchable display. When evaluating an autostereoscopic display, the most important parameter is crosstalk, which is defined as the light illuminance penetrated from the adjacent view into the contemporary viewing zone at the sweet spot (best viewing position) [21], namely X I min ∕I min I max × 100%:…”

“…The possible reasons are: (1) This approach usually requires a lens pitch to be tuned together with the lens profile, which is usually not the case for our display as the width of the lens pitch is quite rigid to ensure each slanted lens covers 9 views. (2) This optimization method assumes that each subpixel can be regarded as a point source, which is indeed an extended source with a unique light intensity distribution pattern [21].…”

“…However, a conventional autostereoscopic display with the slanted parallax barrier suffers from undesired cross talk that deteriorates the stereoscopic image quality. [5][6][7][8] There are many kinds of factors that influence the cross talk in autostereoscopic displays. Kooi 9 found that the contrast of the display and binocular disparity of the 3-D images are the important factors that determine the cross talk.…”
