Liquid Chromatographic- Mass Spectrometric Methods for the Analysis of Persistent Pollutants: Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Organochlorine Compounds and Perfluorinated Compounds

Abstract: Liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC/MS) has become an invaluable technique for trace analysis of pollutants in the environment. Use of this technique offers a faster, more convenient, and more sensitive way to analyze many environmental pollutants. Of these, persistent pollutants in environment, some of which elicit toxicities, are monitored extensively in various environmental matrices as they are known to accumulate biologically through the food chain. Using LC/MS for the analysis of per… Show more

“…However, it is difficult to analyze PAHs with high molecular masses due to their low volatilities and nitrated PAHs [13], which decomposed and adsorbed to the GC inlet and the GC columns, by GC/MS. Therefore, methods of environmental analyisis of PAHs based on LC/MS have been developed in these years [14]. Electrospray ionization (ESI) is the ionization through electrochemical reaction, and direct detection of PAH by ESI/MS is difficult because of the low polarity of these compounds.…”

“…[6][7][8][9] However, only a few analyses of these low-polarity environmental pollutants by LC/APCI/MS or by LC/APPI/MS have been reported. 10 The simultaneous analysis of complex pesticide chemicals by LC/MS has become both popular and useful. 11,12 Therefore, to establish an effective LC/MS analysis of low-polarity compounds is an important subject.…”

“…In order to overcome this disadvantage, several ionization methods 1 ) have been detected using LC/MS. 5 Due to their persistence, POPs are present at levels of concern to public health in various environmental media, 6 and the development of novel analytical methods for POPs is important for environmental chemistry and monitoring. 7,8 It would, therefore, be of considerable benefit if a LC/MS method for the detection of POPs could be developed.…”
