Liquid Biopsy in Glioblastoma

Abstract: Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor. Despite recent advances in therapy modalities, the overall survival of GBM patients remains poor. GBM diagnosis relies on neuroimaging techniques. However, confirmation via histopathological and molecular analysis is necessary. Given the intrinsic limitations of such techniques, liquid biopsy (mainly via blood samples) emerged as a non-invasive and easy-to-implement alternative that could aid in both the diagnosis and the follow-up of GB… Show more

“…As numerous mutations and epigenetic alterations collaborating with the IL-7 receptor signaling pathway have been identified in acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the IL-7 receptor interactome may also be of interest for advancing new treatment development in GBM [ 35 ]. Monitoring effectiveness of newer therapeutic interventions will also be of key importance, and may involve the inclusion of well-characterized biomarkers for liquid biopsy in addition to more traditional clinical and paraclinical measures [ 36 ].…”

“…Among the three strategies mentioned, nano-/microscale MBs are the most extensively utilized for CTC isolation. 100,101 By incorporating specific recognition molecules onto the surface of MBs, they can rapidly bind to target cells and be easily separated from other cells using magnetic fields. Depending on the choice of recognition molecules, MBs can be employed for positive CTC capture 99 or negative isolation of blood cells.…”

“…Within the last 20 years, various methods were developed and applied which can be summarized with the term "liquid biopsy" (Figure 1) [39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46]. Basically, tumor cells or tumor derived nucleic acids, proteins, or EV can be detected in bodily fluids, which are repeatedly accessible and at a lower risk compared to tissue biopsy.…”
