Liquid Biopsy and Circulating Biomarkers for the Diagnosis of Precancerous and Cancerous Oral Lesions

Abstract: Oral cancer is one of the most common malignancies worldwide, accounting for 2% of all cases annually and 1.8% of all cancer deaths. To date, tissue biopsy and histopathological analyses are the gold standard methods for the diagnosis of oral cancers. However, oral cancer is generally diagnosed at advanced stages with a consequent poor 5-year survival (~50%) due to limited screening programs and inefficient physical examination strategies. To address these limitations, liquid biopsy is recently emerging as a n… Show more

“…Only a few studies so far have focused on identifying saliva biomarkers that can predict different clinical outcomes in COVID-19 patients [ 18 , 19 ], and our data represent the first description of epigenetic and immunological determinants at the entry site of SARS-CoV-2 in saliva of COVID-19 patients prior to vaccination.…”

“…Noninvasive approaches try to detect components released by the tumor into blood, ascites, saliva or urine. For both oral cancer and bladder cancer, detection of biomarkers in saliva or urine has been shown to be a promising adjunct to clinical examination and imaging [ 49 , 50 ]. For other tumor entities, such as colon or ovarian cancer, the establishment of liquid-based biomarkers is more difficult because they are less specific.…”

“…More recently, the use of liquid biopsy has also been proposed. In addition, direct immunofluorescence has been described as an auxiliary diagnostic tool useful for cases with similar characteristics to other diseases [59]. Among the proposed biomarkers for the diagnosis of OLP and other oral lesions, including cancer, there are also microRNAs and other non-coding RNAs; however, further validation experiments are needed to clearly elucidate their diagnostic role [60,61] Recently, liquid biopsy has attracted great interest in the early diagnosis of OLP and other oral lesions [62].…”
