Liquid and solid ⁴He near a graphite wall

Abstract

We describe two experiments on the properties of ' He near the surface of graphite. In the first experiment, we measured the growth of solid 4~e on the surface as a function of the pressure in the liquid. In a second, recent experiment we attempted to observe the melting of this solid layer as the temperature was raised. In addition to melting, we observed another, more dominant effect, which we interpret as a possible penetration of 4~e into the graphite.Nous dCcrivons deux experiences sur les propriCtCs de 4~e au voisinage d'une surface de graphite. Dans la premikre expCrience, nous avons mesurC la croissance de 4~e solide sur la surface, en fonction de la pression dans le liquide. Dans une seconde expCrience, plus rkcente, nous avons essay6 d'observer la fusion de cette couche liquide lorsque la tempkrature monte.
