Lippes Loop intrauterine device left in the uterus for 50 years: case report

Abstract: BackgroundThe first Lippes Loop intrauterine device (IUD) was introduced in 1962. It was a plastic double “S” loop, a trapezoid shaped IUD that closely fit around the contours of the uterine cavity, reducing the incidence of expulsion. This IUD was commonly used from the 1960’s to the 1980’s. Some authors state that the IUD can be left in the uterine cavity for an indefinite amount of time. Prolonged use of this device was common, however, it was associated with some complications like uterine bleeding during … Show more

“…Most common presentation was postmenopausal bleeding. (1,2) Cases of silent perforation of LL-IUD with asymptomatic migration have been reported. Spontaneous perforation is a rare, but well known complication of IUD insertion where the IUD initially embeds in the uterine wall followed by complete perforation to thus migrate in the peritoneal cavity.…”

“…Lippesov maternični vložek je bil prvič uveden leta 1962, in sicer kot trapezoidno oblikovana dvojna zanka S, ki se tesno prilega obrisu maternične votline, s čimer naj bi se zmanjšala verjetnost perforacije in migracije iz maternične votline. Pogosto se je uporabljal vložek med letoma 1960 in 1980 (6).…”
