“…Clearly our studies indicate, as previously observed, that the use of liposomes, or other delivery vehicles, profoundly affects the uptake and biodistribution of this type of compounds. Liposomes of various compositions are often used for the selective delivery of highly hydrophobic photosensitizers, such as Zn(II)-phthalocyanine, to animal tumors; the most common are liposomes of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC), dipalmitoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DPPE), and dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) . For example, Zn(II)-phthalocyanine and a 131 I-labeled derivative were selectively delivered in DPPC liposomes to MS-2 fibrosarcoma tumors in mice . In our studies, the positively charged LipoGen liposomes were found to effectively deliver our water-soluble anionic phthalocyanines to cell nuclei, which could potentially increase the biological effectiveness of these photosensitizers.…”

“…55 For example, Zn(II)-phthalocyanine and a 131 I-labeled derivative were selectively delivered in DPPC liposomes to MS-2 fibrosarcoma tumors in mice. 56 In our studies, the positively charged LipoGen liposomes were found to effectively deliver our water-soluble anionic phthalocyanines to cell nuclei, which could potentially increase the biological effectiveness of these photosensitizers. Other liposome-mediated uptake of a zinc(II) phthalocyanine in NHIK 3025 human carcinoma cells is reported to deliver the dye mainly to the Golgi apparatus and the mitochondria, 54 which indicates that the choice of liposome formulation can modulate the biodistribution of this type of compound and consequently deeply affect its biological activity.…”

“…The highly hydrophobic Zn(II)phthalocyanine (ZnPc, 12) has been selectively delivered in DPPC liposomes to MS-2 fibrosarcoma tumors in mice [117], and a formulation of 131 Ilabelled ZnPc in DPPC liposomes has been shown to be an effective radiodiagnostic agent for this tumor [118]. The specificity of tumor-targeting by ZnPc (12) was further increased using cholesterolenriched DPPC liposomes (up to 20 mol %) [119,120], and liposomes containing palmitoyloleoylph osphatidylcholine and dioleoylphosphatidylserine (POPC/OOPS) [121,122].…”

“…As such, many liposome formulations have been designed for proteins, hormones, diagnostic agents and nucleic acids . Additionally, advantages of preparation ease, biocompatibility, biodegradability, broad selection, high drug loading efficiency, high property selectivity and control have popularized their use for Ps delivery in PDT . Ps drug loading commonly makes use of the extrusion method to produce reproducible vesicles with high trapping efficiency.…”
