Liposarcoma of the spermatic cord in a Toy Poodle

Abstract: Liposarcoma of the spermatic cord is extremely rare in dogs and humans. This report describes the clinical signs, typical diagnostic imaging including ultrasound and computed tomography, and treatment of a liposarcoma of the spermatic cord of a Toy Poodle confirmed by histological examination after a surgical procedure. This case highlights the importance of preoperative diagnostic imaging and histopathological examination in dogs with an inguinal or scrotal mass.

“…Liposarcoma is a rare, malignant, fatty tumor that usually arises within the subcutaneous tissue of the axial and appendicular skeleton in dogs 1–5 . In veterinary medicine, there are three histological subtypes of liposarcomas: well‐differentiated, myxoid, and pleomorphic 6,7 . Intrahepatic metastasis has been documented in both pleomorphic and myxoid forms in dogs 3,6 .…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] In veterinary medicine, there are three histological subtypes of liposarcomas: well-differentiated, myxoid, and pleomorphic. 6,7 Intrahepatic metastasis has been documented in both pleomorphic and myxoid forms in dogs. 3,6 In human medicine, the well-differentiated type is the least likely to metastasize, the myxoid variety is most likely to metastasize to an extracutaneous site, 8,9 and the pleomorphic form is the most aggressive.…”

“…Liposarcomas are most commonly reported in the axial and appendicular regions and rarely within the viscera 3,6 . Presence of liposarcoma at the pinna, 9 tongue 10 and the spermatic cord, 11 and periurethral liposarcoma, 12 as well within the radius, 5 have been described in the veterinary literature. In addition, compression of an intradural myxoid liposarcoma has been reported 13 …”

“…Liposarcomas are locally invasive tumours, but metastasize infrequently [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. They are reported most commonly in the axial and appendicular regions, [1,3,6,[8][9][10] but some cases of liposarcomas within the viscera have been reported [3,4,[6][7][8][9]11]. In rare cases, these tumours can arise from the bone marrow in dogs, (2)(3)5) resulting in extradural spinal liposarcoma [12] or intradural-extramedullar liposarcoma [13].…”
