Lipoprotein-associated Phospholipase A2 in Coronary Artery Disease

Abstract: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in western societies. Therefore identification of novel biomarkers to be used as diagnostic or therapeutic targets is of significant scientific interest. Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is one such protein shown to be involved in endothelial dysfunction, vascular inflammation and atherogenesis. Several epidemiological studies have associated high Lp-PLA2 activity with increased risk for CAD even when other CAD risk … Show more

“…Moreover, LDL particles can form complexes with proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans, promoting immune responses and cholesterol crystal formation [ 13 ]. Other lipoproteins such as lipoprotein-a (Lp-a), lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) have also been associated with pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory properties, respectively [ 14 , 15 , 16 ]. In particular, the anti-inflammatory role of HDL cholesterol has been recognized lately, and indices such as monocyte-to-HDL-C ratio are explored to improve the risk estimation of CAD prognosis [ 17 , 18 ].…”
