Lipopolysaccharides of Vibrio cholerae

Abstract: Immunological effects of wall lipopolysaccharide (LPS) preparations obtained from Vibrio cholerae Inaba 569B, Ogawa NIH 41 and NAG 4715 strains by the hot phenol-water procedure were examined in mice. Although these LPS lack KDO, which are basic components of the core region of most gram-negative LPS, they still have potencies as B-cell mitogens, adjuvants, immunosuppressants, poly-clonal B-cell activators and phagocytic stimulants for macrophages. The activities of these V. cholerae LPS on murine immune syste… Show more

“…WbdD is the terminating enzyme and thus regulates chain length by methylat-ing the glycan: the higher the concentration of this enzyme, the shorter the glycan chains (174). An ABC transporter formed by the Wzm-Wzt heterodimer transports the structure to the periplasm (63,150,(175)(176)(177) (Fig. 6B).…”

“…Separate data for these years in children under 5 years old, those 5 to 15 years old, and persons above 15 years old were not reported (23). The vaccine's cumulative protective efficacy during 5 years of surveillance was 65,42,68, and 74% in all of the age groups, children under 5 years old, those 5 to 15 years old, and participants above 15 years old, respectively (23).…”

“…It is well established that the two groups of V. cholerae (O1 and O139) have LPSs that differ in composition and amount (42,43). V. cholerae O139 possesses both LPS and capsular polysaccharide (CPS), which are present at a ratio of 1:2, LPS being the minor component (43).…”

“…Vibrio cholerae is the causative agent of cholera, the severe watery diarrheal disease that has the potential to become pandemic. Based on variable somatic (outer membrane) O-antigen composition, more than 200 serogroups of V. cholerae have been recognized to date (4). Of them, toxigenic strains of V. cholerae typically belong to serogroups O1 or O139 and are rare in the United States (5).…”
