“…injection of 100 μg LPS in mice [41] and higher levels of corticosterone can be detected 2 weeks after i.p. injection of 10 μg LPS [42]. In our study, the chosen time points for determination of corticosterone levels were 0, 3, 6, 9 h after CH treatment, which were matched with other parameters.…”

“…As shown previously (Sokolov et al, 1991), long term exposure to stress, irrespective of its causes, leads to changes in the amount and composi tion of microflora on the animal body surface. The adrenal reaction to stress accounts for multilevel changes in parameters of the immune response (Padgett et al, 2003;Kim et al, 2004;Morales et al, 2006;Nazli et al, 2006;Hayley et al, 2008, Sheriff et al, 2009, which produces an effect on the microf lora: first, common skin bacteria increase in numbers, and then changes take place in the species composi tion of microbial associations (Ushakova, 1984;Sokolov and Ushakova, 1986;Sokolov et al, 1990a, b;Sokolov et al, 1991;Ushakova and Shubkina, 1991). These changes in quantitative and qualitative parame ters of the body surface microflora are characteristic specifically of the generalized adaptation response of mammals, including humans (Campis et al, 2002(Campis et al, , 2003Cheng et al, 2006;Kim et al, 2004, Lewis andMcKay, 2009).…”

“…Reductions in general activity following exposure to LPS have previously been reported in the literature, with several groups showing significant hypoactivity in the open field (Swiergiel and Dunn, 2007; Yirmiya et al, 1994), home cage (Hayley et al, 2008; Huang et al, 1999), and other behavioral paradigms (e.g., the elevated plus-maze; Swiergiel and Dunn, 2007). Additionally, reduced sexual (Yirmiya, 1996) and social behaviors (Arakawa et al, 2009; Bluthe et al, 1992b; Fishkin and Winslow, 1997) have been consistently observed.…”
