Abstract:Inorganic salts are usually soluble in polar and protic solvents, where charge separation of the ions from crystal lattice to solution can be stabilized by polar interactions and hydrogen bonds. In contrast, lipophilic cations and anions combine small, delocalized and sterically shielded electric charges, a large diameter, and an extended, nonpolar molecular surface. As a consequence, their salts feature a lower solubility in water, but a higher solubility in acetonitrile, acetone, or methylene chloride. A sui… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
