“…This form of molecular mimicry exhibited by M. catarrhalis may provide the pathogen with an advantage for evading host defence mechanisms. This structural feature also occurs in LPS of pathogenic strains of Haemophilus injluenzae (24,25) and Neisseria spp. (25) and it has been implicated in virulence potential (26).…”

“…This structural feature also occurs in LPS of pathogenic strains of Haemophilus injluenzae (24,25) and Neisseria spp. (25) and it has been implicated in virulence potential (26). Concurrent studies on the LPS produced by clinical isolates of M. catarrhalis indicate that the OS structure deduced in the present investigation is common to LPS produced by these strains.…”

“…For immuno-TEM, samples were labeled overnight with an anti-NTHi monoclonal antibody, 6E4, followed by goat anti-mouse IgG ultra-small gold secondary antibody labeling (Electron Microscopy Sciences, Hatfield, PA) and silver enhancement. The 6E4 antibody recognizes an NTHi lipooligosaccharide (LOS) epitope and is specific for H. influenzae LOS (18). Controls for immuno-TEM included the following: no primary antibody on LRW-embedded CF BALF; LRW-embedded NTHi 2019 for a positive control; and LRWembedded 10 7 cfu NTHi 2019 with 10 5 primary human airway epithelial cells for a centrifugation artifact control.…”

“…In a recent study, an isogenic heptosyltransferase-III knockout strain (35000hepϪ) was constructed by Filiatrault et al [20] in which immunochemical and molecular mass data suggested the presence of several unusual structural features. Specifically, a series of high molecular weight glycoforms (M r Ͼ 3000) were observed by SDS-PAGE which reacted with a monoclonal antibody (3F11) that recognizes LOS containing terminal LacNAc or paragloboside [21]. Moreover, the masses of the glycoforms as determined by MALDI-MS indicated that these glycoforms were formed by mutiple additions of alternating Hex and HexNAc residues, consistent with a polyLacNAc structure.…”
