“…Although enhanced ROS is related to arsenic-induced cytotoxicity, arsenic also has the ability to complex with -SH groups, thus depleting the level of cellular glutathione (GSH), which plays a critical role in maintaining cellular redox homeostasis (Shi et al 2004). Although both LA and NAC are not regarded as direct antioxidants, they increase the availability of GSH in cells and serve as modifiers of critical protein thiolates, and may influence a host of pathways sensitive to the thiol redox state (Shi et al 2004;Wang et al 2011). Altogether, these results indicate that the toxicity of arsenic can be carried out not only through the generation of ROS, but also by directly attacking SH groups.…”

“…The mechanism by which many inducers induce HO-1 production is a matter of much discussion (27,36,46,47). This report adds new insight to the discussion because we have observed that upon activation with MALP-2, HO-1 expression is dependent on the activation of MAPKs and Nrf2.…”

“…HO-1 protein plays a pivotal role in monocytes activating inflammation, which counteracts immunopathogenic damage caused by stress stimuli (27,28). To confirm the mRNA results, we examined HO-1 protein expression by Western blotting.…”

“…Por outro lado, o risco foi 9,2 a cada 1.000 habitantes no cenário mais restritivo. Se as plantas fossem cultivadas em locais com baixo potencial redox o risco seria maior, devido a maior disponibilidade do As nesse ambiente (XU et al, 2007;WANG et al, 2011). Não houve diferença entre os teores de As pelos dois métodos no solo artificial até a dose 45 mg kg -1 de As, indicando elevada disponibilidade de As nesse solo.…”
