Lipoblastoma in infancy and childhood

Abstract: Lipoblastoma is a rare benign neoplasm of fetal-embryonal fat tissue with a 14% tendency to recur. It occurs almost exclusively in infants and children. To my knowledge, less than 100 cases, including children and adults, have been reported in the English literature. Two retroperitoneal and one case of mesenteric lipoblastoma, all presenting as a large palpable abdominal mass, are described. Our patients, aged 12 years, 7 months, and 11 months, were treated by total surgical excision of the tumors. They are al… Show more

“…3 Some of them are small and round, with a single, vacuolelike fat droplet with a signet ring appearance, and others may be larger, round or polyhedral, with round or notched nuclei compressed by many vacuoles ( Figure 4C). Floret cells-similar to those of pleomorphic lipoma 2 ; scattered, hibernomalike, eosinophilic cells with multiple small vacuoles within the cytoplasm 3,33 ; foci of chondroid metaplasia 3 ; extramedullary hematopoiesis 3 ; and chronic inflammation 3,6 -are additional findings. The myxoid stroma contains abundant hyaluronic acid, which may form pools and cystic lakes of mucin and myxoid hypocellular areas.…”

“…However, liposarcoma in children under 10 years of age is extremely rare (12). Also, lipoblastomatosis usually has distinct lobulation and lacks cellular atypia and bizarre mitoses (9).…”

“…It has a good prognosis, and does not behave aggressively or metastasize, and therefore the treatment of choice is complete but conservative excision (Chung and Enzinger 1973;Mentzel et al 1993;Coffin 1994;Gilbert et al 1996). This type of tumor is rare in patients older than 8 years, however, it has been reported in a number of patients over 10 years of age (Reinders et al 1983;Jimenez 1986;Gisselsson et al 2001). In the present report, the patient was 12 years old and was considered relatively old for the condition, and hence it was considered to be rare.…”
