Lipo Layering of Autologous Fat: An Improved Technique with Promising Results

Abstract: When using free fat autologous grafts as a filling material was first proposed in 1893 by Neuber, the idea rapidly gained enthusiasm and endorsements. Our early experience with autologous fat transplantation was disappointing, but even then it was clear that fat could be transferred with partial success. Since then, further clinical works by Guerrerosantos, Coleman, and others have shown that it is possible, by careful handling of transplanted fat, to improve the survival of this tissue. We have reviewed our r… Show more

“…The mean value of VSF is high in relation to other rates published in the literature (Assadi and Haramis, 1993;Niechajevia and Sevcuk, 1994;Ersek et al, 1998). There is a remarkable difference between our 66% survival and the 90% survival reported by Coleman (1995;1997) and with the study of Guerrerosantos (2000) that employed the same surgical procedure.…”

“…This led to a new wave of negative publications, modifications and even an attempt for reviving the idea of the en block transplantation (Ellenbongen, 1986). On the other hand many authors in Europe and USA reported big series of patients with successful application of autologous fat tissue harvested by liposuction and each one of them suggested a personal technique of processing and reinjection of the graft (Asken, 1987;Bircoll, 1987;Bircoll, Novack, 1987;Carraway, Mellow,1990;Chajhir et al, 1990;Ersek et al, 1998;Illouz, 1986;Fournier, 1996). One of them is S.R.…”

“…Adequate vascularization of the tissue engineered fat is still the most important problem in preventing more extensive use of this tissue. Free adipose tissue grafts are largely absorbed or replaced by fibrous tissue and oil cysts [7], even though some reports demonstrate increasing survival of the transplanted tissue by careful handling [8,9].…”
