Background: Type 2 diabetes is one of the most prevalent and costly chronic diseases in Algeria. A multifactorial etiology was identified with important association of environmental and genetic risk factors. Objectives:The aim of this study was to determine the association of risk factors with type 2 diabetes, among adult subjects recruited from hospital in West region of Algeria, Maghnia. Method:The case-control study was carried out among diabetic patients and healthy subjects at the Regional Hospital Centre of Maghnia and the survey was conducted from July 2008 to May 2009. The study included 280 cases (with diabetes) and 271 controls (without diabetes). The interviews were based on a questionnaire that includes three sections. Part A was designed to collect demographic information. Part B included the lifestyle data (e.g. smoking habits, BMI, physical activity, etc…) and metabolic characteristics were determined in the last part. Data was analyzed using XLSTAT for Windows. The chi-squared test used for the categorical variables, while the student's T test was used for continuous variables. The logistic regression analyses were used to predict risk factors for diabetes. Results:The study revealed that low educational level, low economic level, number of children and number of people living at same house, obesity, physical inactivity, irregular food intake and hypertension were the most important environmental risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes. For the persons who had a family history of diabetes mellitus, the risk for developing this disease was statistically significant (OR=0.51, 95%CI=0.36-0.74, P=0.0001). Conclusion:The present study suggests that low socioeconomic level, changes lifestyle-habits (physical inactivity, irregular dietary intake), obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia and hypertryglyceridemea have been attributed to an unmasking of genetic defect that presented in subjects of this study. This association has a major impact in the rise prevalence of type 2 diabetes.

Background: In most of Indian studies gender-specific prevalence rates for neurological disorders were found to be higher in men than women. Different studies revealed age-specific prevalence rates of various neurological disorders increases till fourth decade followed by decline to seventh decade. Aims and Objectives: The present study was taken to evaluate age-and gender-based inequalities in the clinical diagnosis, comorbidities, and drug utilization patterns of patients admitted to the neurology ward. Materials and Methods: The current study was a prospective cohort study. Case records of 200 patients over a period of January-December 2015 were reviewed. The demographic, clinical, and drug consumption data of the patients were evaluated based on age group (18-59 years vs. ≥60 years) and gender. Results: A total of 200 patients were admitted to neurology wards during the study. Of 200 patients, 60% were males, and 18% were ≥60-yearold. Consumption of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), dopamine agonists, and antidepressants were found to be greater among patients aged >60 years (P < 0.05). Consumption of antiplatelets was significantly more among males, whereas utilization of vitamin was significantly among female (P < 0.05). The incidence of polypharmacy was noted significantly higher among elderly (P < 0.05). The duration of hospital stay was higher for elderly patients than patients aged between 18 and 59 years (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Age-related differences were observed in utilization of AEDs, dopamine agonists, and antidepressants. Gender-related differences were observed in drug utilization of anti-platelets and vitamins. Age-and gender-related differences were observed in the occurrence of polypharmacy.

Platelet hyper-aggregation is a serious manifestation of type 2 diabetes and a precipitating factor in the most frequent cause of death in patients with type 2 diabetesmyocardial infarction. Consumption of flaxseed oil as a dietary supplement containing alphalinolenic acid (ALA, 18:3 n-3) through its metabolism to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5 n-3) and subsequent production of antiaggregatory eicosanoids may reduce such aggregation in vivo. Lipoprotein(a) (Lp (a)) may also influence platelet aggregation in vivo. Furthermore, serum Lp(a) concentrations are increased and bleeding time is decreased in patients with type 2 diabetes, presenting an enhanced risk of myocardial infarction. It was hypothesized that Lp(a) and bleeding time would be correlated due to the considerable molecular homology between apolipoprotein(a) and plasminogen, which should decrease bleeding time. Bleeding time is an excellent measure of in vivo platelet aggregability. The purpose of this study was to determine, if as the result of flaxseed oil consumption, Lp(a) influences the mechanism of any change in bleeding time. A secondary purpose was to determine if gender differences exist in the response of bleeding time to Lp(a) in flaxseed oil consumers. Subjects (n = 40) were randomized to treatment with flaxseed oil (n = 20) or a safflower oil placebo (n = 20). Each of groups contained equal numbers of males (n = 10) and females (n= 10). Some subjects dropped from the study due to reasons not related to treatment side effects. Subjects came for three visits, each three months apart. On each visit, age, gender, and BMI were recorded, bleeding time was performed, and serum Lp(a) concentrations were determined. At the completion of visit 2, subjects were randomized to 1 g of oil per 10 kg body weight each day for three months. Compared with pretreatment measurements, there was a statistically significant increase in bleeding time in the flaxseed oil group among both males and females posttreatment. In contrast, there was no change in the safflower group regardless of gender. Males had a statistically shorter bleeding time pretreatment while males and females showed no difference posttreatment with flaxseed oil consumption. Pretreatment values for Lp(a) and bleeding time showed a nonsignificant correlation among males and a statistically significant correlation among females. A statistically significant correlation also held when all males and females in the study were combined though at a lower value than in females. Significant correlations were lost and/or maintained upon administration of flaxseed oil and safflower oil, respectively. It is also concluded that serum Lp(a) concentrations remain unchanged following flaxseed oil consumption; thus, at least in part

Abstract: The present study led us to conclude that serum Lp(a) levels are significantly raised in type 2 DM and have a positive correlation with serum total and LDL-c levels.
