Lipid Parameters – Significance in Patients with Endogenous Depression

Abstract: Background: People are aware of the consequences of high serum lipid levels, specifically, total cholesterol. Awareness about harmful effects of very low levels of serum lipids is still lacking. Very low levels of serum lipids lead to psychological consequences.

“…This study examined associations with the outcomes primarily using a dichotomous LDL definition (LDL <1.5 mmol/L), but also explored relationships using continuous measures. This dichotomous threshold for low LDL was chosen because of the high frequency of LDL <2.0 mmol/L in statin-treated CAD patients33 and data suggesting that cognition/brain functioning is theoretically most adversely affected when LDL serum concentrations are <1.5 mmol/L 1,34…”

“…total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density (HDL), low-density (LDL) and very-low-density (VLDL) lipoproteins in the context of depression show that all those parameters were lower in the patient group, compared to the control group [72]. Dimopoulos found a correlation between low TC and depression in the elderly patients [73].…”
