Lipid Metabolite Biomarkers in Cardiovascular Disease: Discovery and Biomechanism Translation from Human Studies

Abstract: Lipids represent a valuable target for metabolomic studies since altered lipid metabolism is known to drive the pathological changes in cardiovascular disease (CVD). Metabolomic technologies give us the ability to measure thousands of metabolites providing us with a metabolic fingerprint of individual patients. Metabolomic studies in humans have supported previous findings into the pathomechanisms of CVD, namely atherosclerosis, apoptosis, inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance. The most widely… Show more

“…Thus far, the pathomechanisms of CVD are mainly attributed to atherosclerosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation [ 13 , 24 ]. It is well known that the deposition of TAGs and cholesterol attributes to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.…”

“…Usually, atherosclerosis development, oxidative stress, and inflammation play important roles in pathogenesis of CVD [ 13 ]. In addition to serving as essential components of cell membranes and playing key roles in cellular functions, lipids and their metabolisms are directly involved in these processes.…”

“…Because of the inherent sensitivity to even subtle changes in the actual phenotype, metabolomics is steadily gaining popularity in different areas of medical research. Altered lipid metabolism in CV disease (CVD), in particular, has been the focus of a number of recent studies [ 8 , 56 ]. Metabolomic profiling seems to improve both the risk stratification and early identification of CVD.…”

“…Plasma has been the most studied biofluid in this disease and is expected to reflect changes that occur in other tissues and organs, such as the brain. This is important in the case of MDD, where major modifications are expected to occur in the brain, that is inaccessible for molecular and biochemical analysis [63]. The accessibility of plasma makes it preferable to identify markers of lipids altered in MDD.…”
