Lipid Metabolism in Acromegalic Patients before and after Selective Pituitary Adenomectomy.

Abstract: Lipid metabolism was studied in 16 acromegalic patients who all underwent transsphenoidal selective pituitary adenomectomy (SPA). Before the operation, their serum lipid levels correlated with none of the basal levels of serum growth hormone (GH), basal levels of plasma somatomedin-C (SM-C), fasting levels of plasma glucose (FPG), peak levels of plasma glucose (PGp) or basal and peak levels of serum immunoreactive insulin (IRIb and IRIp, resp.) in the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and obesity indices. “…Thus, low TC and LDL levels are anticipated in active acromegaly, and an increase will accompany normalization of the GH–IGF‐I axis. A similar rise in serum TC and LDL (and apo B) has not been observed with other treatment modalities for acromegaly but these are less consistently effective in normalizing serum IGF‐I (Tsuchiya et al. , 1990; James et al.…”

“…There are limited data on the serum lipoprotein changes that accompany treatment of acromegaly. The reduction of mean serum GH below 5 mU/ l, by surgery or somatostatin analogue (SMS) therapy, produces a significant fall in serum TG, a rise in HDL and an increase in apo A1 (Tsuchiya et al , 1990;James et al , 1991;Cohen et al , 1992;Lam et al , 1993;Oscarsson et al , 1994;Wildbrett et al , 1997). With the exception of Landin-Wilhelmsen et al .…”
