Lipid lowering drugs and recurrences of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias in high-risk patients

Abstract: This is the first observation that the use of lipid lowering drugs is associated with a reduction of recurrences of VA in patients with CAD and ICD implants. These data require confirmation in a prospective randomized trial.

“…Statins may prevent atrial remodelling with antiinflammatory and antioxi- The fasting lipid profile, 12-lead surface ECG, and echocardiographic findings before and after statin therapy are given dant effects [16]. The majority of the antiarrythythmic effects of statins are evident in high-risk patient populations [17]. It was demonstrated that statins may protect atrial tissue from damage and structural remodelling via sympatholitic activity [18].…”

“…14) Statins have pleiotropic effects including anti-inflammatory or antioxidant actions that are expected to favorably affect arrhythmogenic activity. 30 31) Recently, Liu, et al conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials and observational studies. 32) Their results suggested the usefulness of statins in preventing AF, but they concluded that the data were insufficient to recommend the widespread use of statins for AF prevention.…”

“…Statin use was associated with a reduced probability of ventricular arrhythmias in patients with CAD and implantable cardioverter defibrillator implants (6,8,(12)(13)(14)(15), in patients with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy (12), and in patients who underwent revascularization procedures (11). Their use has also been associated with lower rate of mortality (13,16,27,28), which could partly be explained by reduced rate of ventricular arrhythmias.…”

“…Previous trials have suggested that statins may decrease the incidence of sudden cardiac death in patients with CAD (3)(4)(5). This beneficial effect of statins could partly be explained with their antiarrhythmic properties (6,7).…”
