Lipid Composition of Human Aqueous Humor

Abstract: The lipid composition of human aqueous humor was determined in ten samples from patients undergoing cataract surgery. The mean concentration was 16.4 mg/dl for total lipids, 2.5 for phospholipids, 1.1 for free fatty acids, 1.7 for unesterified cholesterol 2.0 for triglycerides, and 9.0 mg/dl for cholesterol esters, respectively. The presence of lipids in aqueous humor suggests that lipids are transported through the human aqueous humor.

“…In bovine (table 3) as well as in human serum the FA-toalbumin ratios are normally below 1. Therefore, the ratios calculated for human AH, using the FA concentrations determined by Jahn et al [12], seem to be rather high. Although we find clearly lower ratios in bovine AH, our results also demonstrate higher FA-to-albumin ratios in AH than in serum.…”

“…However, to our knowledge no data are available in the literature for that ratio in AH, so far. Using lipid extraction, thin-layer chromatography and densitometry, Jahn et al [12] investigated lipid components in AH from 10 patients undergoing cataract surgery. For nonesterified FAs they found values between 0.2 and 2.9 mg/100 ml with a mean of 1.1 mg/100 ml.…”

“…The AH is composed of ions (Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cl -, HCO 3 -), crystalloid or low molecular weight substances (glucose, ascorbate, lactate, pyruvate, urea, H2O2, amino acids, etc. ), colloidal or high molecular weight substances, such as proteins (Borazan et al, 2010;Browne et al, 2011;Ghanem et al, 2011;Lim et al, 2010), lipids (Jahn et al, 1983), biologically active substances (catecholamines, eicosanoids, hormones, etc.) as well as some miscellaneous substances such as hyaluronic acid, hyaluronidase, etc.).…”

“…In this respect, the lipid signalling provides greater efficiency compared to that by proteins. Normal AH has been shown to contain diverse phospholipids (PLs) . The TM and AH phospholipids and sphingolipids of human control and POAG as well as normotensive and ocular hypertensive DBA/2J mouse have been previously analysed using moderate‐resolution mass spectrometers …”
