Lipid and Lipoprotein Levels following Pure Estradiol Implantation in Post-Menopausal Women

Abstract: 8 post-menopausal, post-oophrectomy and hysterectomy women had a 100-mg pure 17Β-estradiol pellet installed in their subcutaneous abdominal tissue. The pellet caused a marked systemic hormonal effect in these patients causing an up to 30-fold increase in plasma estradiol and a marked decrease in follicle-stimulating hormone levels. It showed a significant increase in plasma high density lipoprotein (HDL) and HDL to total cholesterol ratio levels, no change in plasma triglycerides and very low density lipoprote… Show more

“…For the purposes of this study, each subject acted as her own control by being studied twice: pre-implantation (on day 21 of the menstrual cycle) and 6 weeks after implantation (but before progestin administration). This interval has previously been shown to allow full expression of metabolic changes induced by hormone implants (Sharf, Oettinger, Lanir, Kahana and Yeshurun 1985). At each visit, venous blood was obtained under standardized conditions after an overnight fast.…”
