Lipid and Lipoprotein Cardiovascular Risk Factor Responses to Episodic Academic Stress.

Abstract: Substantial evidence indicates that mental stress has adverse effects on serum lipid levels and cardiovascular health. This study examined the effects of final medical degree examinations (mental stress) on serum lipid and lipoprotein cardiovascular risk factors in African medical students. Twenty-seven healthy male and female medical students had lipids, lipoproteins, urea and uric acid assessments before and during final year examination. The results showed that black African medical students had adverse lip… Show more

“…In the present study, although LDL-C and TG were increased by different percentages with different values of positive mean of differences but p value for raised observations of both parameters was found the same. The results of LDL-C and TG were consistent with the results of some of previous studies [17,18]. Some of the investigators argued that the increase in concentration of circulating lipoproteins were due to hemoconcentration due to vascular fluid shifts.…”

“…Lipids have been extensively studied due to their extensive association with atherogenesis, and the formation of atheroma plaques in the arteries as well as vascular stenosis 10 . Hyperlipidemia can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases in the presence of other risk factors 11 . The main risk factors of atherosclerosis are disruption of normal activity of the vascular endothelium and also formation of atheroma plaques under the intima 12 .…”
