Lipid and fatty acid composition of the endogenous energy sources of striped bass (Morone saxatilis) eggs

Abstract: ABSTRAClThe unique physiological flexibility of the early life stages of striped bass is attributed to the calorierich endogenous energy sources of the striped bass egg. Eggs of different aged striped bass from geographically separate populations were examined tor lipid and fatty acid compositions and were found to be basically similar. Yolk components of the eggs contained significantly less total lipid than oil globules, were more diverse in lipid class composition and consisted mostly of polar lipids. Oil g… Show more

“…Rather, lipid extracts have been prepared from whole ovaries, ovulated eggs or embryos. Because lipoprotein yolk in species possessing discrete oil droplets also contains neutral lipid (L~ger et al, 1981;Brind et al, 1982;Eldridge et al, 1983;Ando and Hatano, 1991), this approach reduces the precision of knowledge concerning the compartmentalization of the various neutral lipid classes in the different yolk components. Many studies have also been performed using ovaries sampled during recrudescence rather than ovulated eggs.…”

“…In striped bass, wax and steryl ester made up 90% of the egg oil (Eldridge et al, 1983). TAG was found to be the major neutral lipid in the oils from oocytes of four species of Oncorhynchus (Lrger et al, 1981;Ando and Hatano, 1991) and that of the embryos of an annual East African fish (Nothobranchius guentheri, Aplocheilidae) (Brind et al, 1982).…”

“…Its constituent lipid and PUFAs stores are an important factor for embryo development and further larval survival (Eldridge et al, 1983;Fraser et al, 1987). Fatty acids from the yolk reserve provide both an energy source and structural components for developing fish embryos and larvae.…”

“…The time from fertilization to first feeding is very short in striped bass -in the order of 6-10 days (Doroshev, 1970;Rogers and Westin, 1981;Eldridge et al, 1982;Tsai, 1991). The endogenous food reserves of prefeeding larvae consist of yolk (primarily protein) and an oil droplet (mainly steryl and wax esters) (Eldridge et al, 1983). Findings differ on the relative rates of usage of these two endogenous sources of energy.…”
