Lipid analysis of follicular casts from cyanoacrylate strips as a new method for studying therapeutic effects of antiacne agents

Abstract: Our method proved suitable for the detection of quantitative and qualitative changes in lipid profiles of both infundibulum cast content and surface lipids. It enabled simple, non-invasive and objective assessment of the most relevant lipid classes in the sebaceous infundibulum, and efficient monitoring of drug effects on the follicular infundibulum.

“…It has been demonstrated that retinoids enhance penetration of its combination partner into the follicular canal. It is furthermore recommended after significant reduction of inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions to maintain the treatment success with the topical retinoid alone to prevent the new formation of microcomedones [2, 19, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49]. …”

“…Topical retinoids, by exerting comedolytic and anticomedogenic actions, have been shown to resolve existing noninflammatory acne lesions and open and closed comedones and prevent the development of microcomedones [4,5,6]. In addition, some retinoids, namely adapalene, tretinoin and tazarotene, exert an anti-inflammatory effect, providing therapeutic benefit even for inflammatory lesions [7,8,9,10].…”

“…CFB is the most reliable tool to sample the follicular content of facial skin [22,23,24]. We believe that CFB can provide a visual evaluation of acne lesions in order to obtain a more objective measurement of patients’ clinical improvement.…”
