Lip Augmentation With Porcine Small Intestinal Submucosa

Abstract: Short-term lip augmentation was achieved in all 8 patients (4 patients had multiple strands placed). This study demonstrates technical ease and early safety. Surgisis should serve as scaffolding for ingrowth of striated muscle of the lip, potentially providing long-term augmentation. This study introduces Surgisis as a novel implant for lip augmentation.

“…Porcine dermal collagen and small intestinal submucosa (SIS) have both been successfully used in a wide variety of surgical procedures to provide strength and support when soft connective tissues have been lost or damaged. 11,50,66,87,96,99 Derwin et al 26 examined the biochemical, biomechanical, and cellular properties of collagen-rich extracellular matrices, GraftJacket (Wright Medical Technology Inc, Arlington, Tennessee) and TissueMend (TEI Biosciences, Boston, Massachusetts), and 2 SIS grafts, Restore Orthobiologic Implant (DePuy Orthopaedics Inc, Warsaw, Indiana) and CuffPatch (Biomet Inc, Warsaw, Indiana). The SIS matrices were found to have higher elastic moduli than GraftJacket and TissueMend, and they reached their maximum elastic moduli at lower levels of stretch.…”

“…Porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS) and porcine urinary bladder matrix (UBM) have been used extensively to repair defects of the esophagus, bladder, cervicovagina, rectum, urethra, ureter, trachea, blood vessels, orbital floor, thoracic wall, and tendon and ligaments in humans and various animal species. SIS has been investigated extensively and has been used successfully in dogs, cats, and horses to repair various corneal or scleral defects .…”

“…[13][14][15][16] Seymour et al, Betz et al, Dougherty et al, and Schellini et al created 5 mm, 8 mm, 8 mm, and 15 mm  6 mm orbital floor defect, respectively, in rabbit orbital defect model. [17][18][19][20] In the present study, 10 mm size defect was created in order to place relatively large-size implants.…”
