Linnaeus was right all along:UlvaandEnteromorphaare not distinct genera

Abstract: Ulva, one of the first Linnaean genera, was later circumscribed to consist of green seaweeds with distromatic blades, and Enteromorpha Link was established for tubular forms. Although several lines of evidence suggest that these generic constructs are artificial, Ulva and Enteromorpha have been maintained as separate genera. Our aims were to determine phylogenetic relationships among taxa currently attributed to Ulva, Enteromorpl/(J, Umhraulva Bae et I.K. Lee and the monotypic genus Chloropelta C.E. Tanner. an… Show more

“…Two genera are especially prominent. Species of the genus Ulva, which now includes the former genus Enteromorpha 7 , are mainly responsible for green tides. The thallus (vegetative body) is only one or two cells thick but the shapes vary even within species and can be sheet-like, tubular or fern-shaped 8 .…”

“…Total DNA from silica gel-preserved thalli was extracted using the CTAB method (Doyle & Dickson, 1987), modified for 50 mg of starting material, with an initial rehydration step as described by Hayden et al (2003). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplifications of the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 (rRNA) and the chloroplast rbcL gene were performed (Shimada et al, 2003).…”

“…Due to the small distance between the sites, data were put together and presented/related as mean values (GSE) for the south arm of the estuary. Green macroalgae (mostly Ulva intestinalis and Ulva compressa, according to the recent revision of Hayden et al, 2003) and the seagrass Zostera noltii, were dried (for 48 h at 60 C) and ash free dry weight (AFDW) was assessed after combustion of samples for 8 h at 450 C.…”
