Linking Reservoir and Surface Simulators: How to Improve the Coupled Solutions

Abstract: TX 75083-3836, U.S.A., fax 01-972-952-9435. AbstractA full analysis of the problem of coupling two independent industrial simulators, a reservoir simulator and a steady-state network simulator, has been performed.

“…The quality of the "delumping" process is assessed by comparing the results to those obtained by carrying out the flash calculation (or the series of flash calculations) with the "detailed" fluid. As the delumping acts like an interface between reservoir and surface facilities simulation (Montel, 1998), a number of authors have addressed this issue (Faissat and Duzan, 1996;Litvak and Wang, 1998;Barker and Leibovici, 1999;Barroux et al, 2000;Leibovici et al, 2000;Weisenborn and Schulte, 2000;Ghorayeb et al, 2003). An application to distillation calculations is presented by Rabeau et al (1997).…”

“…Schiozer and Aziz (1994) investigated applying domain-decomposition techniques to well subdomains to accelerate iteratively coupled simulation. Byer et al (1999) presented a preconditioning technique that can accelerate fully implicit coupled models solved with extended well subdomains.…”

“…Several examples of this approach are described in the literature (Hepguler et al 1997;Trick 1998;Tingas et al 1998;Zapata et al 2001). Barroux et al (2000) presented a review of the available methods for coupling separate network and reservoir simulators and recommended a number of developments to reservoir simulators that would provide greater flexibility in the data exchange with the network simulator and improve the performance of the coupling methods.…”
