Linking Macroinvertebrates and Physicochemical Parameters for Water Quality Assessment in the Lower Basin of the Volta River in Ghana

Abstract: The health of the lower basin of the Volta River in Ghana was evaluated in January–February and May–June 2016 using physicochemical parameters and benthic macroinvertebrates sampled at 10 locations. Selected environmental variables were compared to accepted environmental water quality standard values where applicable. Principal component analysis (PCA) and redundancy analysis (RDA) were used to analyse the association between the benthic macroinvertebrates distribution and physicochemical variables. Pesticide … Show more

“…This indicated the effect of discharging of treated wastewater in the Nile River. Many previous studies indicated the effect of wastewater on environmental characteristics of surface water (Abdel-Satar et al 2017 ; Berger et al 2017 ; Onwona Kwakye et al 2021 ; Rahman et al 2021 ; Abdo et al 2022 ; Tanjung et al 2022 ). The microbial respiration as well as decomposing activities in wastewater consume part of the dissolved oxygen, affecting the pH value reflected in the changes of the other parameters like increasing of values of nutrients and NH 4 (Onwona Kwakye et al 2021 ; Abdo et al 2022 ).…”

Another factor that contributed to a low level of DO reality to the greater water temperature during the summer season (Table 1 ) was reduction due to the inverse connection between dissolved oxygen and temperature (Ice 2008 ).…”
