Linking integrative medicine with interprofessional education and care initiatives: Challenges and opportunities for interprofessional collaboration

Abstract: Although the fields of interprofessional education and collaboration (IPE/IPC) and integrative medicine (IM) are both recognised and clearly advancing as of late, a curious paradox exists: IPE/IPC and IM are both concerned with communicating about and attempting to resolve differences between healthcare professions with the fundamental goal of improving patient outcomes, yet they have remained quite distinct fields of research. This disconnect could be due to the fact that one field deals with integration with… Show more

“…Although the care models of IM and biomedicine differ, they are both focused on patient well-being-and for this reason many clinicians of both orientations are willing to cooperate in the best interests of the patient (Chung, Ma, Hong, & Griffiths, 2012;Hollenberg & Bourgeault, 2011;Narahari & Kanjarpane, 2013;. This collaboration of health care models holds great potential for patients; however, tensions exist within many health care systems that threaten the efficacy or even the possibility of such partnerships.…”

“…1,2 IPE and CIM both seek to bring together diverse health professionals while maintaining their unique attributes and contributions. The two fields share conceptual aspects of interdisciplinary care and collaborative practice, including an emphasis on enabling practitioners to communicate more effectively, encouraging shared problem solving and decision-making, and training practitioners to integrate different knowledge structures into a single action plan.…”

“…The study of IPE and the conduct of interdisciplinary practice cannot remain distinct and separated. 4 Although Montgomery 23 professes that professionals need to be educated together to practice together, we believe that students need to practice together to be educated together. As health care evolves, this remains a career-long obligation.…”
