Linking Cognitive Scripts and Job Design Variables: The Relationships Between Script Recognition, Growth Need Strength and Intrinsic Motivation

Abstract: A study was conducted in order to investigate the relationships among script recognition, growth need strength (GNS), feedback from the task, and intrinsic motivation. It was hypothesized that GNS would moderate the script recognition‐intrinsic motivation relationship for intrinsic script recognition items. It was also hypothesized that intrinsic script recognition would be positively correlated with feedback from the task itself while extrinsic script recognition would exhibit a negative relationship with thi… Show more

“…First, according to Bem's (1965) selfperception theory, when intrinsic and extrinsic rewards are both very high, people may mistakenly infer that they perform the target task for extrinsic reasons (Staw, 1976). Thereby, they have redefined their own purpose or The notion of``play'' is associated with the choice of an activity, self-determined goals and strategies, opportunities to readjust goals, whereas the term``work'' is related to performance standards, strategies, and external feedback from supervisors (Cellar and Barrett, 1987;Cellar et al, 1992). Researchers have marshaled considerable evidence testifying to the relationship between task labels (e.g.…”
