Introduction: Periodontitis is a systemic chronic inflammatory disease resulting from a complex polymicrobial infection causing tissue destruction as a consequence of perturbation of the homeostasis between sub gingival microflora. T.forsythia has been strongly implicated in the onset of periodontitis. The level of glycemic control is the key to determining increased risk. In adults, HbA1C levels >9% have a higher prevalence rate for periodontitis than those without diabetes. In adults, random blood sugar levels >200mg/dl have higher susceptibility to periodontitis. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out in a university setting at Saveetha dental college. Total of 8 samples were collected from November 2020 to February 2021. The subgingival plaque samples containing bacterial cells were pelleted by centrifugation at room temperature. Following centrifugation with all buffer solutions, quantitative RT-PCR was performed with stratagene MX3000P and the relative gene count was calculated using relative CT method. The purified DNA molecules were identified by agarose gel electrophoresis and T. forsythia was identified using this method. Results: The assessment of mRNA expression of T.forsythia assessed by RT-PCR showed that T.forsythia was seen with more prevalence in patients with periodontitis with diabetes mellitus (n=1.388), than in patients with periodontitis without diabetes mellitus (n=1) ( P=0.0028 < 0.005). The study was statistically significant. Conclusion: This study shows that T.forsythia is seen with more prevalence in patients with periodontitis with diabetes mellitus when compared to periodontitis without diabetes mellitus.

Background: Silver Nanoparticles (AgNP) plays a crucial role in nanoscience, nanotechnology and nanomedicine. AgNP has antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-antigenic, anticancer and cytotoxic properties. Cytotoxic effects of mouthwashes on the gingival tissue have always been a priority. Pterocarpus santalinus, with the common name of red sandalwood. The aim of the study is to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of red sandal mediated silver nanoparticles mouthwash using brine shrimp lethality assay. Materials and Methods: The mouthwash was prepared using red sandal mediated silver nanoparticles, ethanol, distilled water, sucrose, sodium benzoate, clove oil, sodium dodecyl phosphate with 0.1% in concentration. The methodology includes green synthesis of Red sanders mediated Silver Nanoparticles synthesis followed by tests for Cytotoxic effect using mouthwash. Results: Red sanders mediated silver nanoparticles have high potent cytotoxic potential, it has been proved with the help of brine shrimps. LD50 concentration was obtained to be 80µL, with half the population of nauplii in the respective well surviving post incubation. Conclusion: From the observed result, it has been concluded that Pterocarpus santalinus/red sandal mediated silver nanoparticles mouthwash has a considerably moderate cytotoxic effect. It is a rich source of various potential phytochemicals and is a simple, rapid, stable and cost effective method for nano based medical applications.

Aim: To assess the awareness about stem cells and its application among the general public in Chennai. Introduction: Stem cells are very unique cells and have been isolated from the dental pulp, exfoliated deciduous teeth, the periodontal ligament, the dental follicle and the dental papilla. Adult stem cells can differentiate into many dental components such as dentin, periodontal ligament, cement and dental pulp tissue but not into enamel. Methodology: A cross sectional questionnaire based study was carried out among the general public in Chennai. This study included 110 participants. Results: Male participants between the age group of 21-40 years were more aware about stem cells and its sources and its various applications. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrated a satisfactory level of awareness among the general public regarding stem cells.
