Linked Services for Enabling Interoperability in the Sensing Enterprise

Abstract: Abstract. In future, the so called "sensing enterprise", as part of the Future Internet, will play a crucial role in the success or the failure of an enterprise. We present our vision of an enterprise interacting with the physical world based on a retail scenario. One of the main challenges is the interoperability not only between the enterprise IT systems themselves, but also between these systems and the sensing devices. We will argue that semantically enriched service descriptions, the so called linked serv… Show more

“…A paradigm introduced by the FInES (Future Internet Enterprise Systems) cluster of projects [17] to refer to an enterprise making decisions by using multi-dimensional information captured through physical and virtual objects in its environment, and providing added value information to enhance its global context awareness. In other words, this notion particularly focuses on enriching enterprises' context awareness through intelligent, interconnected, and interoperable smart components and devices that power enterprise systems, making them responsive to events in real time and aiming at reaching seamless transformation of (raw) data to (tailored) information and (experienced) knowledge [18].…”

“…Centralised information processing approaches can deprive real-time enterprise decision making since information is commonly gathered in an a-posteriori fashion (Thoma et al, 2013). Furthermore, centralisation suffers from scalability and fault-tolerance problems which negatively affect information system functionalities and limit their capabilities (Corchado et al, 2012).…”

“…In the context of sensing enterprises Lázaro et al introduced the FASyS (Lázaro et al, 2012), a centralized model for personalized risk management. Moreover, Thoma et al (Thoma et al, 2013) poposed the use of linked services to access sensor devices in order to assure interoperability and connect the shop floor to the top floor. The aforementioned approaches focus on aspects of dynamic service discovery and composition.…”
