Linked Information Visualization for Linked Open Government Data. A Visual Synthetics Approach to Governmental Data and Knowledge Collections

Abstract: Open government data initiatives provide citizens with access to the information that governments have about their countries (such as data about people, resources, infrastructure, or  services) upon which they act. Information visualizations can help to make sense of these complex data and knowledge collections, but are mostly used to shed light on subselections of data only, without coordinated efforts to connect them to bigger pictures up to now. In analogy to linked data initiatives, this article di… Show more

“…The second report concerned the conflict in Syria in the year 2020; for this report, a map was used for data visualisation. Yet, maps alone are not good data visualisations as they do not convey any information (Windhager et al, 2016). Thus, coloured maps were chosen to show controlled areas by the different conflicting parties in Syria.…”

“…Dawes et al (2016) developed a preliminary ecosystem model for planning and designing OGD programs. Windhager et al (2016) discussed linked information visualization for linked OGD and presented a visual synthetics approach to governmental data and knowledge collections. Hossain et al (2016) used content analysis and conducted a review of 96 relevant papers in order to ascertain the current state of research on open data.…”
