Linkage and Cam Design with MechDev Based on Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines

Abstract: Several software products exist in order to support engineers during the mechanism design process. The software “Mechanism Developer” (abbr. MechDev) is one of these products. MechDev provides many functionalities concerning the kinematic and kinetostatic analysis of mechanisms based on revolute, prismatic as well as cam joints. This paper will introduce the software MechDev and will outline these functionalities. Furthermore, it will name the advantages of MechDev compared to other software products. In order… Show more

“…Generally, classical linkages are combined with modern servo drives and control systems to implement such a rise-to-dwell motion. Thereby, often one-dimensional mechanisms are used to realize those motions, e.g., in [9]. On the one hand, these mechanisms have various advantages, e.g., in terms of motion accuracy, mechanical limitation of the working space, or synchronous motion [10].…”

“…For instance, the follower motion can be described by a variety of functions depending on the amount of design parameters involved and the function complexity: cycloid, modified harmonic, trapezoidal, modified trapezoidal, polynomial, spline, Bézier, harmonic, etc. [29,[31][32][33][34][35]. In practice, the profile shown in Figure 2 is one of the most commonly used in industry, namely, a dwell (s 1 )-drop (s 2 )-dwell (s 3 )-rise (s 4 ) motion.…”

“…The design process requires taking the equivalent stiffnesses of the front and rear brake systems into account since the difference between the displacements of the swingarm's two sides strongly affects the roller's balancing position on the cam surface. The cam synthesis procedure has been explored during the last years [7][8][9]. However, because the stiffnesses of the brake systems are highly nonlinear in nature, the relationship between the input force and the BFD ratio by the VCBS is quite complicated.…”
