Link Level Performance Assessment of Reliability-Based HARQ Schemes in LTE

Abstract: Abstract-This paper discusses two approaches of reliabilitybased HARQ, adapting the packet size of a retransmission in a 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) system. We focus on the adaptation of the retransmission size in terms of physical resources by using information 1) of the channel, namely the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or 2) reliability information from the decoder output, taking the overall transmission into account. Both approaches will be compared to the HARQ system used in LTE in terms of throughput per… Show more

“…In Woltering et al [16], in order to increase the system throughput, a multi-level ACK/NACK transmission scheme is proposed. In Milo and Hanus [17], the influence of the HARQ scheme on the probabilistic-temporal characteristics of the system is analyzed.…”

“…For instance, reliability-based HARQ schemes enable the receiver to request data retransmission with different redundancy levels. This can further improve the communication efficiency, particularly, for delivering large size packets [9], [10], [11].…”

“…The feedback channel is prone to errors due to the noise and interference in the system, which can result in wrong detection of ACK/NACK signals [11]. Typical cellular systems, such as Long-Term Evolution (LTE), rely on higher layers to correct these kinds of errors [12].…”

“…In such scenarios, frequent handover interruption time and fastvarying mmWave link impact both the reliability and latency requirements. Although existing techniques, such as Hybrid automatic repeat request (hybrid ARQ or HARQ) [18], can provide a certain degree of reliability, this may violate the latency requirements. To satisfy high-reliability and guard against the potential radio link failure, we introduce SDN as the architectural enabler for efficient coordination among multiple BSs and UE to meet the service requirements.…”
